Toddler Activities: The Very Hungry Caterpillar

Here are some activities based on the much-loved classic, The Very Hungry Caterpillar. The enchanting story documents a hungry caterpillar as he eats his way through the week, with vivid collage illustrations and toddler finger sized holes to explore. This story has recently captivated Scout so I have come up with these very quick and simple activities to capture her imagination!

Painting

I simply drew some outlines from the book then Scout painted them. We talked a lot about the colours to use and referred back to the book. Scout had so much fun! She ended up painting her hands and fingerpainting the butterfly! I cut up some crepe paper too to glue and stick. I plan to laminate these and create bunting or punch some holes in them and use for a threading activity.

Threading using card and pipe cleaners

A very easy activity to prepare that gives children lots of fine motor practise, especially if they enjoy taking the circles on and off the pipe cleaner as much as Scout did!

Story bowl

A super little activity to encourage retelling the story and sequencing using props.

Caterpillar play doh!

We made the first caterpillar together when I introduced the activity then I left it out for Scout to independently access. We had some interesting looking caterpillars! Play doh is the perfect exercise for little hands.

Food toss

A wonderful way to get some gross motor skills practise. All you need is a laundry basket, a diy caterpillar face and some toy food…simple!

Sensory tray

I had about five minutes to prepare this before Scout woke from her nap but here it is. She played with this for ages! (Check out my video on insta to see how quick it was to set up).

So there you have it, some quick, simple and fun activities that embrace all the joy of The Very Hungry Caterpillar.
