Toddler Activities: DINOSAURS

We are dinosaur crazy in our house at the minute. I’d love to say the interest was sparked from a book but I have to be honest and tell you we recently introduced Scout to The Land Before Time and she is hooked. This led to the theme for this week’s activities and toy rotation!

Trip to the library

As a start off point, we searched through our home library and visited our local library to dig out some dinosaur books, a mix of fiction and non-fiction (although the language in non-fiction may be too complex, children love to look at realistic pictures).

Dinosaur playdough

I used the basic playdough recipe from the Imagination Tree, it’s amazing! I tweaked it by adding in some used coffee grounds and used coffee instead of water. It smells delectable! We used the playdough in so many ways..small world play, dinosaur footprint making, imprinting fossils, dinosaur eggs and so much more!

Dinosaur number puzzle

Scout wasn’t overly fussed about this one, she just wanted to peel the stickers off, but my three year old niece loved it! Dead simple, and a good way to introduce number recognition.

Dinosaur egg match

Another simple activity for introducing number recognition, and good for those fine motor skills. I picked the eggs up from a pound shop, you’ll find them everywhere in the run up to Easter.

Bubble wrap printing

We painted bubble wrap then printed it on to some paper. When it had dried, I cut out the dinosaur shapes.

Dinosaur puzzle
Dinosaur match

I printed these cards off to match up with our dinosaur figures. We haven’t done a lot of matching yet but Scout really enjoyed this Montessori-inspired activity.

Dinosaur small world

We set up a very basic small world scene. The coloured scarves were a good way to introduce new language when discussing the landscape, e.g..the hot, orange lava flowing from the erupting volcano.

So there you have it, some fairly quick and easy activities to do with your dinosaur loving toddler. I hope you have fun!
